  • Construction: Handmade – Regular and Junior Entrants
  • Construction: Props – Regular and Junior Entrants

Auditions are first-come, first-served, and when the judging time expires, no more entrants will be accepted. The location for the auditions will be announced in the EvilleCon 2017 Program (for specific directions during the convention, please see an EvilleCon Staff Member at the Registration Table). Entrants will have FIVE minutes to present their entry to the judges.

Walk-On Entrants and Group Cosplay participants are not pre-judged and do not need to audition.

Construction: Handmade

Entrants in the handmade category must have made all pieces of the costume, including, but not limited to:

  • Shirts/Tops/Blouses
  • Vests/Jackets
  • Coats/Capes/Cloaks
  • Pants/Trousers/Shorts
  • Skirts

Entrants may have purchased or modified ready-to-wear non-specific items such as:

  • Socks/Stockings/Tabi
  • Shoes/Boots/Geta
  • Gloves
  • Hats
  • Neckties

As a rule, any piece which is non-specific to the character may be store-bought, while more recognizable items must be handcrafted.

Example: If you are cosplaying as Shikamaru from Naruto, it is not necessary for you to have made your mesh undershirt, but if you are cosplaying as Vincent from Final Fantasy, you may not have purchased your glove. This rule applies to props as well as costume pieces.

Exception: Items that are beyond the skill and equipment of most costumers may be store-bought ONLY if the store-bought item does not distract from the cosplay. This exception covers shoes, weaponry (but not armor), hitai-ate (such as those found in Naruto cosplays), and small, specific props such as pens, suckers, eye-patches, coins, dice, or other generally manufactured items. These exceptions may only approved at the judges discretion.

References: Handmade division entrants should provide the judges with adequate references. The judges may not be familiar with the character you are cosplaying. References should include:

  • A photograph or official artwork of the character you are cosplaying as (please provide photos and artwork that you feel are similar if your character is an original one). At least a front and back view should be provided.
  • Documentation of your creative process — sketches, journals, in-progress photos of the costume. Something that verifies that you made the costume.

Judges reserve the right to reject any reference for any reason. Rejected references or inadequate references may result in disqualification from the handmade portion of the contest. Contestants may still enter as a Walk On.

Junior Entrants

Junior division entrants (15 and under) may have had parental assistance in the construction of the costume but all of the rules on what may and may not be store-bought still apply.

Costumers
Costumers may enter their costumes on a model or models. All of the above rules apply, and a winning costumer, not the model/models, will receive a prize.

Construction: Props

Entrants in the Props category must have made their own prop(s). Only the prop(s) will be judged.

All props must comply with EvilleCon’s weapons and tagging policies.

Props must be handmade. Judges will evaluate props based upon difficulty and effort of crafting the prop.

References: Props division entrants should provide the judges with adequate references. The judges may not be familiar with the prop you have created. References should include:

  • A photograph or official artwork of the prop you have created. At least a front and back view should be provided.
  • Documentation of your creative process — sketches, journals, in-progress photos of the prop. Something that verifies that you made the prop.

Judges reserve the right to reject any reference for any reason. Rejected references or inadequate references may result in disqualification from the handmade portion of the contest. Contestants may still enter as a Walk On.

Junior Entrants
Junior division entrants (15 and under) may have had parental assistance in the construction of the prop(s) but all other rules still apply.

Walk-On Entrants (Group Cosplay)

Entrants in the Group Cosplay will be judged on characters likenesses, characters portrayals, and quality of costumes for the group entrants as a whole.

Groups may consist of more than six entrants, but only six prizes will be awarded.

During the Cosplay Contest, the MC will read the group’s introduction as written on their entry sheet and will enter the stage together.

Walk-On Entrants (Individual)

Walk-on entrants may show any type of costume or prop — handmade, found-item assembly, or store-bought. Walk-ons will be judged on character likeness, character portrayal, and costume quality.

Registration

All entrants in all categories MUST attend the Cosplay Contest Registration in the Main Events Room on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 1:30pm. Registered entrants who do not appear at the registration on time will be immediately disqualified and will not be allowed to walk during the Cosplay Contest.

The registration serves to smooth out any technical wrinkles, gives contestants the chance to adjust to the space before the contest, and to practice their walk on the stage. As such, it is essential to remain quiet and attentive and follow all instructions of the EvilleCon Staff Members and Minions. Anyone who is disruptive, who is not attentive, or who is not present in the room may be disqualified.

The only people allowed in the registration area are entrants, a parent or guardian for junior entrants, costumers and their model(s), Minions assigned to the Cosplay Contest, and EvilleCon Staff. No exceptions.
